Rants of a Weird Little Bird

Random stuff involving myself…and people around me. Hello, and goodbye. :-)

Oh, Crying Shame!

For two years, every able-bodied male has to serve national service. After three months’ of military training, all recruits are then posted out to various places. Recruits deemed to have leadership capabilities are also sent to the School of Infantry Specialists – and Officer Cadets’ School (OCS).

After more than half a year of gruelling training, the cadets from OCS prepare for their commissioning parade, and this is where the scandal breaks out.

During a resting session, the parade instructor would pick out a Singaporean Officer Cadet at random. Sample conversation:

Instructor: Sing the words of the national anthem to me.
Cadet 1: (singing) Mali kita…
Instructor: Mali! What is mali!?
Cadet 1: …
Instructor: Never mind, go on.
Cadet 1: (singing) Mali kita yayak…
What is “yayak”?!
Cadet 1: …
(Instructor stares at clueless cadet for a while)
Instructor: Sit back down.
(Cadet 1 sits down)
Next! You! The one with the specs! Stand up!
(Cadet 2 stands up)
Cadet 2: Yes sir?
Instructor: Sing the national anthem.
Cadet 2: (singing) Mari kita raya…
Instructor: Raya!

(and so on and so forth)

Sometimes you have to wonder at the state of the country when fresh-faced officer cadets, after more than six months in a military OFFICER’s school, cannot even sing the words of the national anthem!

For heaven’s sake, here are the words – I have not used google.

Mari kita rakyat Singapura
Sama-sama menuju bahagia
Cita cita kita yang mulia
Berjaya Singapore

Marilah kita bersatu
Dengan semangat yang baru
Semua kita berseru
Majulah Singapura
Majulah Singapura

If the officer corps of the SAF cannot even sing their own country’s national anthem, can they understand what they are defending?

  1. If it were to come to this, I’d rather they know how to fight than to sing… :P
